INTERIOR MONOLOGUE FROM "LOST KINGDOM OF THE MAYA"

Due Feb. 11th/Feb. 12

Write an interior monologue from the point of view of a member of the Mayan Civilization featured in the documentary.  Staying in your role, explain what you do and why your contributions are so important to the entire society.  You may also chose a modern day descendant  of the Maya.  If  you do this, then you can explain why you carry on the traditions of your ancestors. 

Minimum 1 page.  Be sure and use specific information from the movie and write in the 1st person.  

LIBERATION THEOLOGY READINGS

Due Monday, February 9th:   Read the two handouts on Liberation Theology and highlight and annotate the following:

1.  What is liberation theology?
2.  What is the Vatican's view of Liberation Theology?
3.  What are Christian-Based Communities?
4.  Who was Archbishop Romero, what happened to him,  and why was he considered a Liberation Theologian (a person who practices and believes in Liberation Theology)?

If there is not enough room in the margins to annotate, use blank space below excerpt.  This means be creative!  I would use lines and arrows connecting key passages to your annotations.

COLONIALISM AND REVOLUTION IN LATIN AMERICA

Read the chapter "Viceregal Rule and Revolutions" and the circled questions that accompany the chapter.  For each circled question, highlight and annotate the information from the chapter that answers the question. Annotation means that in the margins you would write down a word or phrase that represents the key information that you highlighted.

You do not need to answer the questions in writing.

FINAL PROJECT

Please remember that each group must select the human right(s) that your issue violates.  This will be incorporated in the poster as well.

FINAL PROJECT DUE FINALS WEEK

The final project for semester 1 is a group activity that is outlined in the handout distributed in class.  I want to emphasize some specific aspects from the handout:
1.  You will work in groups of 4 to develop a poster that explores a human rights issue and solutions to address that issue.
2.  You will be working on the activity over the next several days both at home and during class.  The following are due dates for each phase of the preparation and development of the poster:

*  1/15, 1/16 - In groups choose an issue and delegate research tasks to each member.  Submit to teacher your issue and delegation of task.
*  1/20, 1/21 - Come to class with research completed to share with group.  Determine what other research needs to be done.
*  1/22,1/23 - Finalize content and layout of poster
*  Day of final - Create poster and present to class

Grading requirements:

1.  Individual grade based on relevant, fact-based research and constructive contributions in the planning and creative process.
2.  Group grade base on complete coverage of research requirements, appeal and aesthetics of poster and quality of presentation.

ARTICLE ON TERRORIST ATTACKS IN PARIS

For Thursday (1/15) or Friday (1/16) bring to class a news article or opinion piece about the terrorist attacks in Paris.  You can focus on the response to the attacks if you like.  Be prepared to discuss your article.
